I purchased the Motorguide trolling motor from Amazon. It shipped
quickly and was relatively easy to install on an aluminum V-bottom. The
motor is quiet and operates smoothly. There is plenty of speed on high
to get across the lake quickly without having to fire up the gas motor
and the low speed is just about perfect for slow-rolling the banks. It
raises and lowers easily and the steering is intuitive once you get used
to it. Seems very sturdy. After having it and using it regularly the
last two months I have chunked into quite a few submerged stumps,
powered through thick weeds, and even stuck it in the mud when going
through some very murky water in a shallow bay (duh right?). It is none
the worse for wear and the shaft has not bent.
cons: Since my bow does not sit perfectly level with the water (unlike a bass boat) when I let my foot off of the steering the motor will turn. This is true whether I the motor is running or not. Not a huge deal, just something to get used to.
